Not ever having a Pug with OE shocks/struts installed, I figured if/when they went I would have to replace with Boge or KYB and suffer the demise of the famous ride the OE's give. NOT SO, the OE 505 shocks are rebuildable! And the kits cost around 8 bucks a corner. The more you know I guess!

No wonder why people always want ALL the money for an OE set. I have seen them run $800 a corner rebuilt and installed. Guess my $600 505 was worth it even more.

Ah Peugeot... I miss the 405 I owned when I still lived in the Netherlands. (owned a 305 before that). The ride was great. I just wish I had the T16 (or even a Mi16)... That... would have been killer!

Now I drive a big V8 sedan, and a '05 mustang gt. Not too shabby. But man... I do miss that french comfort!

You are making me curious about the 505. I've never even been in one.

I did think of you yesterday when I saw an actual 505 drive by when I was procrastinating at work. An hour later I saw a 205 convertible drive by. Usually many months go past between 505 sightings for me, so it was relatively significant.

Interesting that you mention the BX. They've become very rare, yet I spotted one on my company gated parking lot today, even though it's usually filled with 90% Ford Focus wagons/Renault Megane wagons as that are the only company provided company cars. The pictured BX is a late ('92) base model without powered locks, as evidenced by the key whole in the trunk button.

Well, not as rare as the 505. But they're all considerably over 20 years old and were always considered rather disposable. How many Ford Tempos do you still see? Not that I want to compare the two, I love the BX. I even test drove a BX GTI last year for a fellow opponaught.

I'm going to spam with with some links.

1990 XM V6, manual, new inspection, 231k km, looks great (I'm salivating), €3250 which seems fair. 2.5 hours away. http://link.marktplaats.nl/m913934246

1990 XM V6, manual, new inspection, 79k km, looks great (I'm salivating even more), €5250 which I'd pay instantly. Almost 2 hours away. http://link.marktplaats.nl/m914307533

1988 205 CTI. New inspection, lots of maintenance done. €1250 seems a little (too?) cheap. 45 minutes away http://link.marktplaats.nl/m908367878

1987 200TD hearse. Not green on green, but I wanted to show it anyway. Black, used to be red. Original hearse, 551k km. http://www.autowereld.nl/mercedes-benz/…

1986 230TE. Very dark green on green vinyl. Manual, very clean, absurd price, close by. http://www.speurders.nl/overzicht/auto…

1978 Audi 100 coupe with 30k km and a conversion for the disabled... A day drive away, but whatever. €4500. http://suchen.mobile.de/auto-inserat/a…

1978 Audi 100 with blue interior. 5 speed. €2250. Can be seen 2 hours from me (Amsterdam) http://suchen.mobile.de/auto-inserat/a…

Another 1978 Audi 100 with blue interior. 51k km, slushbox, 3 hours from me. Will already be in that general area less than 2 weeks from now. http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/deta…

1990 red on red Citroën BX wagon, diesel, manual. Near Munich, where I won't be in many weeks. http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/deta…

1988 red base model Citroën BX. € http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/deta…

1989 Citroën BX diesel, one owner, low mileage, slushbox. Not cheap. 3 hours away. http://ww3.autoscout24.de/classified/266…

those XM's are both fantastic. V6 is nice but I would find a diesel if I was to bring one over. Even if there is a small market for XM, there is a much bigger contingent of people who are diesel anything nutty and would buy it just to burn french fry grease in it. Those really are appreciating quite a bit!

That CTi is quite fantastic for the price. I am going to keep looking at it a bit more

Mercedeses - that hearse is awesome, but not a stellar as that one with the green MB Tex Holy god do I want that. But the price is way high. It is really a nice looking car, but that would be 10 grand by the time it came over!

Audis - that one with the slushbox particularly piques my interest. Those rims and caps in the trunk... although a coupe has to be uber rare over there. Never saw these shores at all. Both of those are just awesome

BX - for you to go look for one of those it would have to be closer. Nice examples, that wagon is great looking. Again I think the diesel would win though. Those have to get 50mpg at least.

Thanks for looking for these, I am going to take a bit closer look on my end and see if there is a star in there or elsewhere!

When I received my drivers license my parents had a BX diesel (NA, manual, hatch). It got about 43 mpg (US) in real life.

I'll check if I can find some more cars later. The green MB is very close. I might have to visit them some time, as I can't imagine they're serious about that price. They're rather big on overpriced cars, here's a list of what they offer (27 pages!). What would be an acceptable price for you for a car this nice?

edit: that green Benz is interesting. That company imported it themselves. They list the plate, but when I check the plate I get the details about the 230TE but I don't get any Dutch registration date. Yet the plate seems to date to 2010, given the results I get when I run similar plates with changed last number (plates are handed out chronologically). I haven't seen this before, ever. My guess is that they imported this car in February 2010 during the Dutch import craze during our old classic car tax system. Interesting. Might be a great bargaining tool.

For that green benz? Hmm, well it is almost everything I would want. Hubcaps, manual windows, manual trans, but I can get a MB-tex car any of day of the week, and without AC those are not the most comfortable seats in the summer! With 120K+ miles and missing a Becker radio it would have to be closer to 3500 Euro for me to consider bringing it over. 5 would be a stretch. The drivers seat is out of shape as well so that would have to be rebuilt with foam. Nice car, but I dont see them bringing it down to anywhere near 5000 even. While I know they are going to appreciate more over here, a nice 300TE for even 3000 sits on the market for months. I know the market over there is much more all over the place, but I would be okay with taking one with decent interior, decent body etc for 1500-2000. I do have alot of parts for them, I just need to make sure the euro only bits are working.

also, what happened to this thing? :) Ice cream cone melt on it or something? http://www.autoscout24.com/Details.aspx?i…

Yes, the green MB tex Benz.

Finding a 1990 or older BX or XM diesel will be hard. CX diesel though, easy (in the Netherlands). I did find this one €350 BX Diesel , but it's too cheap and too far away (2.5+ hours) to just casually hop by.

There's this BX in Belgium. Diesel, red, manual, one owner, base model, very low mileage, ugly interior. Flemish, luckily, so I can use my first language instead of a translator. €2250.

I also wish this was closer by. €200. Getting a replacement engine will be easy, as they were offered in many vehicles well into the 90s and maybe even 00s. Google translate:

We sell our Citroën BX 19D with regret.

many new parts (battery, high pressure belt, front and rear pads, alternator belt, front and rear spheres, sphere contactor breaker, 4 new tires, new starter, new alternator, new wiper.

Car in very good condition for the year and sold for parts or rehabilitation of the motor ( broken belt distribution )

About that Citroën camper van: the owner, a Citroën specialist, actually has a 1988 BX GTI for sale as well. A BX which inspection expired a decade ago and no listed price. It doesn't look overly clean, so I bet it's cheap. I drive by that town a few hours from now. I'll see if I can hop by and take a look at both cars. I'll cycle to the location of that Unimog later today, maybe.

Maybe because the deadline for the 2016 Carbagerun winterrally registration is today, and I want to join. It requires <€500 <1998 cars, although we don't need to have a car right now.

I might be able to help you out with its dimensions. I ran the plates ... There usually isn't that much technical information available with these old vehicles, but registered wheel base is there, and it's 320 cm. Width is registered at 200 cm. I can't guarantee accuracy.

French wikipedia lists the C35 as 496 * 199 * 237 cm (l, w, h).

I have to register today . I can theoretically add another person later on. Do note that the tickets are handled as a lottery as too many people want to join. That lottery will be next week, so it's very plausible I can't enter. Registration fee is €329 for a team of two, plus €39 for every extra person. You'll only have to pay when you're allowed to join, obviously. If I register it will be with my German brother in law, so it'll be an international team already. February 15-19, with feb. 15 in the Netherlands and feb. 19 in Andorra, so we'll need extra time for the way home. It's not really Lemons though, as it'll be public roads, mostly off-highway, through winter landscapes in street legal vehicles. Speed is not important.

I participated 2 years ago, here are some random pictures . There was a significant lack of fresh snow that year.

I've visited the place. It was 17:10 (the camera is still on winter time), and the people had left already. I was able to look at the vehicles, but the doors were closed. The BX with its hydropneumatic suspension was too low to photograph underneath. The dash clock on the van was frozen (broken or dead battery?). They had a nice little collection there. The BX is flanked by a late year XM (certainly post 1990) and next to the XM is something I suspect to be a Citroën AX based Mega . It's certainly Mega rare.

Anyway, neither vehicle looked close to pristine and neither looked as crunchy as the Passat. Especially the BX looked solid (but slightly rough). The interior looked fine, but due to the glare I didn't take a picture. The van, well, assuming the mechanicals are fine I guess you can't go wrong for the price. I've thrown the pictures in the folder I used for the Passat. Picture 0108 is the first of the series. Picture 109 of the moist spot is in front of the driver side front tire of the BX. If the BX is mechanically sound and gets a new inspection and timing belt (because stationary for a decade) I think it would be worth in the €1k-2k range.

(I'm still uploading pictures. 0126 is the last)

wow those Mega's are rare! I love them just for the soft top, but that would have to be too rare for my budget, maybe - unless they are unloved. I would be interested to see what they want for that BX for sure. If I know what the wet spot is and as long as the timing belt is still on it I would be game for it. Just enough body work to keep it cheap but still something I could handle. Almost the same engine as your 205 GTi IIRC, are those interference even?

Kinja'd!!! duurtlang > 505Turbeaux

My 205 is of the 1.6 variety. The BX GTI (8v) has a 1.9, similar but less powerful as the one in the 205 GTI 1.9. No idea about interference.

So, you'd like me to contact these guys for a test drive? What about the van?

What might be interesting is that behind that wooden fence are many parts cars. Given that this is a Citroën specific company most will be Citroëns. I might be able to bargain in some parts (for the BX, the C35 will be harder).

The shop that sells the BX offers on its website the service of refilling spheres, plus they've got parts cars (no idea if this includes BXs, but I expect so). I could ask if they can provide something.

One vehicle I did notice due to a conversation with someone else is this VW . Stupid cheap and rather rust free judging from the pictures. The only red flag I spotted was the expired inspection (Christmas 2013), meaning it hasn't been driven on public roads in a while. Location is doable I guess.

Right. First thing tomorrow: pick up the phone, call both the BX and the T3 owners.

To give you an impression: These are the four locations that are relevant. I'm going to drive from Groningen (place of residence) to Zwolle for work tomorrow. The BX is located in Beilen, right next to the highway. A highway I'll pass anyway when travelling to/from Zwolle. Boxmeer is where the VW is located.

So the VW is not overly far away, but the issue is that I've chosen not to drive my company car privately for tax reasons (as in: officially zero, or it'll cost me). A tiny detour, like for the BX, can be excused. Another two+ hours absolutely not. Why do I bring this up? The VW is almost too good to be true: or there's a major problem or the owner doesn't know what he's got. So I'd like to move fast. The ad is up for three days now, so not that long, plus the bids on the site come close to the asking price. I could always go in the weekend, with my own car, but tomorrow would be more efficient.

If you've got a list of things I should ask for/look at, please let me know. It's almost midnight here so I don't have that much time left (for research) before my beauty sleep.

I've seen the BX again.

The good:

starts and runs instantly (with the help of an auxiliary battery)

suspension rises like it should

interior like what you can expect from the pictures on the website. I didn't spot any damage, but it doesn't look pristine. It's a 200k km car. It's perfectly acceptable though.

underside seems hard, I didn't spot any rot

has been stored in a dry place for the last 12 years

asking price: €450.

The bad:

has been stored for 12 years, nothing has been done to the car since. Owner died, current seller put it in his lot

the seller wants to sell it as-is. Will need a trailer to get it out of there. Brakes are not to be trusted after such a long storage period

lots of fluid on the ground, close to the front bumper, multiple spots. Seller: "must be a leaky radiator". This seems plausible. I didn't spot fluid elsewhere.

The ugly:

the seller claims it needs a restoration. He imagines it's best suited as a donor for someone who wants the chassis numbers plus period-correct plates.

the Mega is 'totalled' according to the seller. It's impossible to find body parts. Mechanicals are easy, as they're Citroën AX parts. The front of the Mega is damaged, as you can see in my photo from a few days ago. I didn't ask for a price.

I didn't take any pictures. I had that guy besides me the whole time and the condition was like my previous pictures showed. In hindsight a few pictures of the engine and the under side would've been welcome. My impression is that it was quite a decent car when it was parked, but I can't judge the effect the storage period had on the rubbery bits of the car. You should see it as a project.

What's your opinion? Leave it?

well, for 450 I would have to be interested, but that raises a whole lot of question about transportation. I am going to suggest a pass on that one as interested as I am. I am going to buy something you can at least drive to the boat. Dammit, how many km to your place? I would think about a tow but I have no idea what rates are like over there. Do they take AAA? Haha I have 150 miles free towing through them!!!

If this was in your backyard or something like 10 miles away it would be a no brainer. I would have it put in a shop to go through it to at least get you to the boat safe.

yeah that mega would be a hell of a project in fabrication, but fun to think about. At least it inst in the crusher.

It's about 50 km one way. Towing is something I'd have to pay for. My normal drivers license doesn't allow towing above a certain weight, a weight (3500 kg) that's probably exceeded with a towing vehicle+content+BX+trailer. I also need to find a towing vehicle, as both my 406 and 205 don't have a towing hook. The E30 does, but that one doesn't have a registration/plates. I could ask a friend though. The problem then is what to do with the BX.

I think this BX is too great a hassle and gamble. We should try to forget about it. Sadly.

But wait, there's more. There's one that escaped my searches for the simple reason that it's an ad for two BXs, one a 1991 and the other one a 1990 and the ad is listed as 1991. It's the only GTI I could find that looks decent and is not incredibly expensive. And where is it located? The city I was in just a few hours ago... I'll be there again Monday.

Kinja'd!!!

The grey one: BX GTI 16V, first registration 01-oct-1990, inspection expired 11-2014, owner since 10-2014

The black one: BX GTI 16V, first registration 29-aug-1991, inspection expired 5-2014, owner since 05-2012

The seller asks for €2500 for each car. Both have 'about 200k km'. Check out all the other vehicles he has for sale.

holy chevy vans and american iron!

I have to check the manufacture date on the 1990, I dont want to have to have you sit on it till december. Nice cars though, which one is the 1990?

The grey one... The one with the round headlights. Date of first registration is the first of October 1990. No idea when it was manufactured, probably somewhere mid 1990. I don't know how to check to be honest.

doh, I missed that in original post. Shiny things in pictures distracted me. In the US and I know on all VW's (not sure on that model) have date of manufacture stamped on a metal tag inside the drivers door along with the VIN. This one could have been a special order and actually built in October, or it could have sat on a lot. To be safe I always like to bring them in after first date of reg so there are TWO documents and corresponding checks so you dont get questioned on it. Should probably pass on those too due to that. If the car was first titled on X date there is no way it could be built after that is my reasoning. And I havent been banged up yet

and also, this interests me and is right in your backyard if google maps is to be believed. You ever end up in this town EEXTERVEEN ? http://www.autoscout24.eu/Details.aspx?i…

crazy dual carb GL model, some neat details, buta little bit of rust in the arches. I just know it is close. I am going to figure out how to only search for vehicles in a certain locale or close on these sites

That one is very close to me. I don’t know that much about Saabs, but I can always check it out. This weekend for example. I might give that CTI owner a call as well, if you want me to.

edit: I’ll figure out a way to do range. I’ll edit it in in a few minutes.

On mobile.de you can enter a PLZ (postal code). You can only use a German postal code, so this complicates things. You can do the same for autoscout24, in the German .de version. 26826 is the German postal code closest to me, 65 km to my east. Both sites will include Dutch results when using this method. On autoscout you shouldn’t forget to tick the Netherlands though.

on marktplaats.nl (a big dutch site. Auto’s —> “uitgebreid zoeken” for advanced search) you can use 9742ge as a Dutch postal code (under “afstand” meaning distance) to give you a real range from me.

edit done.

I did and it worries me because at least with the C900’s the front suspension rot is a terminal thing.

I’ve sent the owner an email asking for more detailed pictures. Also, about autoscout, you can use a Dutch postal code plus a range. You just need to use autoscout24 .nl . Postal code 9742ge

awesome! I have my daughters this weekend so I am on and off. Let me know on email if you hear back on that saab. The fender would not deter me from that, it being a neat color and model (that would likely become my pickup truck/snow beast for a few years) but any rot in the suspension mounting would

I just called the owner of the 205 CTI. He just returned home from a test drive... Anyway, the car has not been sold (yet), the potential buyer will contact the seller with a definitive result next Wednesday. Because the potential buyer is an acquaintance he doesn’t want to sell me the car behind his back, so I agreed with the seller that I’m calling him back next Wednesday.

Bad timing, as the car has been for sale for a month already. The recent nice weather isn’t working in my favor here.

I suddenly remembered a friend of mine works at an internet auction house. An auction house with a car branch, with a knack for the odd/old. They’ve got three batches of auctions right now. 1 , 2 and 3 .

Perfect condition Alfa Romeo 33 in Italian police livery. One owner for over 20 years. 1351cc boxer 4 with double carbs. 5-speed. 78k km. Reserve not met at €400. Auctioneer expects between €4k and €5k, meaning that that the reserve is below this. My connection who works there is responsible for other auctions (coins I believe), so I could ask him if he could tell me the reserve.

Considering the prices I’m primarily interested in that Alfa. It’s just so clean. The rest is interesting , but certainly aren’t bargains.

Another update:

First, the €500 car winter rally is on. Out of the 250 or so teams that were handed out a starting ticket in the lottery my ticket was the third to be drawn . About the team name: the other guy (my brother in law had I been married) is a German doctor who’s starting a new stint in a psychiatry ward (for work), so I thought it was a fun play of words. You showed interest in coming along, but for now I’ve only registered myself and him. I do prefer a third person coming along. We’ll see how it goes.

Second, I’ve got a bit of a BX craze, so excuse my focus on these cars. Anyway, on a Citroën forum I came across a 1986 BX Sport . This is a type 1 BX, and the predecessor of the GTI. It’s got the even funkier dash without stalks and a twin dual barrel carburettor equipped 1.9L engine providing 126 hp (it’s a 1000 kg car). Owner tried to sell it on the forum in October, and posted an update two weeks ago that it’s still for sale. He didn’t get to sell it during winter because having it registered as a classic he had to suspend the plates during winter (don’t ask). He’s asking for €1500. Issues: One of the spheres isn’t very good any more, mid section of the exhaust leaks (comes with replacement), timing belt condition ‘unknown’ so should be changed preventively. One month of inspection left so road legal, no idea where the (Dutch) guy lives. The body kit is stock.

Actual car:

Dash ( not the actual car):

The dash of the Sport does have a conventional speedometer/tachometer, unlike the mundane BXs of the time.

you know the BX I really like is the one with that dash in it! Sorry I wasnt able to get back to you on the last rack of cars, my starter packed up in the 505 and I have been ripping that down to get on it - of course on a weekend I have my daughters too. This BX is very interesting. Are those headlights stock on some GTi and sport models? If I was to go with this I would likely have you grab a timing belt and throw it in the trunk for me!

The headlights aren’t standard, but they might be a factory option. I’m not sure. Could always throw a set of stock headlights in the trunk. What did you think about the Alfa 33? I have zero idea about the marketability of that car, but I was quite smitten by the pictures/condition.

I think it is gorgeous, and I love it, but I actually am not sure about the marketability of that. I would want a buyer in place before I made any moves on it. The boxer alfa crowd over here is an unknown thing to me, I have a friend with a few ‘Suds and I will try and raise him today to ask

Don’t hurry too much with the Alfa. The auction ends over a week from now. Do you remember the Unimog you linked to before? Like I mentioned it’s very close to me, so I grabbed my bicycle and I tried to find it. And find it I did! Lots of people around, so taking pictures would be awkward. Let’s just say it stands out, a lot. It looks like it does in the pictures I guess. No clearly visible (rust)damage. I tried to find it on Street View, but didn’t find it. There was a 205 convertible (no cti) parked on the little square where the ‘mog is currently parked though.

I left a VM for my flat engine alfa friend. I already know he would be excited about the prospect, but I need to calm him down a bit to see what someone would pay for one on this side
